Second Grade Art Lesson 7
Looking at Totem Poles, Part 2 Completing our Totem Poles
Objective:
The students will complete the totem poles they designed in the last lesson. This will provide them with a full circle experience of researching a topic (totem poles), careful observation exercise through drawing, planning a unique design of their own and completing the plan.
Materials:
scrap paper, scissors, white glue, drawing plans
Procedure:
Review the information the children reported during the conclusion of last week's lesson. Explain that we are going to build the totem poles they have designed using colored construction paper and scissors. Remind them of the importance of turning the paper rather than the scissors when cutting. Encourage them to use lots of detail by building up surface designs with smaller shapes and lines of color. Give the students plenty of time to do solid work and make sure they have their plans and other references available while they work. When each half (each can) has been completed, put white glue around the top of the bottom can and sit the top can on top. The glue will not hold the cans together permanently but will secure them long enough for display if handled carefully.
Conclusion:
Display the totem poles in a place where the entire school can enjoy viewing them. Have the students look at and discuss their work together pointing out the strengths of the different designs. You may want to have each student write about their totem pole design and the meanings they suggests.
