Second Grade Art Lesson 29
Value Study, Part 1 Making a Shape into a Form
Objective:
The student will know that value is the range of lightness and darkness of a color or of black and white. The student will make a gray scale and use it as a reference to make shapes look like forms.
Materials:
one sheet of white paper, one strip of white paper, a pencil
Procedure:
Begin by asking if anyone remembers what value is. Value is the range of lightness and darkness of a color. Value reveals form. In other words, value is what makes something look rounded or three dimensional. Shapes are flat and 2 dimensional, having height and width. Forms are three dimensional having height, width and depth. Using value on your shapes can make them appear to be forms. Value, also called shading, requires the use of the muscles in your arms, adding pressure or lightening up on pressure to get the different ranges. We are going to make a gray scale which shows us how many different values we can get with our pencil. Take the strip of white paper and at the top, press down as hard as you can (without breaking your pencil point) and color in a small square area. Below that, color in another small square area, only do not press quite as hard, lighten up a little. Continue down the strip of paper gradually lightening up with the amount of pressure you put on your pencil until you get to where you are just barely whispering your pencil across the paper. Leave the very bottom square completely white. You should be able to make at least, but not limited to, five different values. Next, on the white sheet of paper, draw off three organic shapes. These should be large and drawn off with the lightest value. You are going to color in each blob with you pencil using a full range of values to make it look three dimensional. Color the shape with curved lines to help emphasize the roundness. Use your gray scale as a reference to make sure you use all of the different values available.
Conclusion:
Review the meaning of value. Ask the students what a gray scale is. Also ask if they can explain the difference between 2 and 3 dimensions. Save their gray scale and blob forms until our next lesson.
