Second Grade Art Lesson 16
Tissue Paper Portraits, Part 1
Objective:
The students will create a shape portrait of themselves using warm colors and fill a background with cool colors using tissue paper. This exercise will reinforce previous learning about color and self portraits.
Materials:
small pieces of warm and cool color tissue paper (these can easily be cut on a paper cutter many layers at a time), a piece of white construction paper or other heavy weight paper, liquid starch and paint brushes
Procedure:
Begin by asking the students if they can remember what the warm and cool colors are. Remind them that the warm colors are red, yellow and orange and the cool colors are blue, green and purple. Tell them they are to use the warm colors to create a shape portrait of themselves. The will use the warm color shapes to make a full length portrait doing something they like to do. Emphasize that the portrait will not look realistic but should have the main gesture and proportions they have. We will come back and draw details on them in our next lesson. Use a paint brush and liquid starch to secure each piece of tissue paper. Encourage them to overlap pieces to get richer colors. The background should be filled in with all cool color shapes. When the entire surface is filled, put each work in a safe place to dry.
Conclusion:
Ask the students to repeat the warm and cool colors. Also have them tell you what a self portrait is. Reiterate the words gesture, (the main action or pose of a person) and proportion, (the relationship between the different parts of the body).
