Art Lesson Summary for Second Grade Students


2nd Grade Art Lesson 1

Pattern People
Objective:
The students will exhibit an understanding of pattern by drawing a picture of themselves onto a heavy sheet of paper, cutting it out, and tracing it several times onto a sheet of paper. They will fill in their clothes with patterns as well as the background.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 2

Completing our Pattern People
Objective:
The students will complete the pattern study they began last week.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 3

Crayon Color Wheel
Objective:
The students will know what the primary, secondary, warm and cool colors are. The students will make their own color wheel.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 4

Coloring Fall Trees / Warm and Primary Colors
Objective:
The students will learn that the primary colors are red, yellow and blue. The student will look at fall trees to notice the warm colors, red, yellow and orange, and mix these colors together to complete their tree drawing.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 5

Watercolor Resist/ Painting our Background with Cool Colors
Objective:
The students will know what the cool colors are and use them to complete the background of our fall tree drawings. The students will know what a watercolor resist is.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 6

Looking at Totem Poles
Objective:
The student will search for and examine Indian Totem Poles using reference materials in the arttango program as well as materials provided by their teacher and the internet if it is available. The students will design their own totem poles on paper to work from in our next lesson.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 7

Completing our Totem Poles
Objective:
The students will complete the totem poles they designed in the last lesson. This will provide them with a full circle experience of researching a topic (totem poles), careful observation exercise through drawing, planning a unique design of their own and completing the plan.

Color Theory/ Complimentary Colors
Objective:
The students will learn what complimentary colors are and experience creating neutral colors by mixing complimentary colors together.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 9

Painting an Object with Complimentary Color
Objective:
The student will exercise looking at an object to represent it and will do so using the complimentary color of the background. The student will also experience using uncommon tools for painting.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 10

Making a Thankful Photomontage
Objective:
The student will learn that a photomontage is an image created by using a variety of photographs cut and arranged to look like a single photograph. The students will contemplate things they are thankful for and search for images to represent each thing they are thankful for.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 11

Drawing your Thankful Photomontage
Objective:
The student will work to represent his or her photomontage using pencil and paper. The student will be able to see the same image represented using different media.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 12

Designing a Treasure Box - Part 1
Objective:
The students will create a treasure box using readily available materials. The students will incorporate basic design and aesthetics principles.

Foiling Over our Treasure Boxes and Drawing in Designs
Objective:
The students will continue to plan and design their treasure boxes by covering over the applied shape designs with aluminum foil. The students will enhance the raised or relief designs by making incised lines and shapes creating recessed areas.

Completing our Treasure Boxes
Objective:
After the many steps involved in this project the students will complete their treasure boxes and experience the rewards of hard and focused work.

Objective:
The student will consider what is most important to them about their family and the things they do together and represent it in a crayon drawing.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 16

Tissue Paper Portraits
Objective:
The students will create a shape portrait of themselves using warm colors and fill a background with cool colors using tissue paper. This exercise will reinforce previous learning about color and self portraits.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 17

Completing our Tissue Paper Portrait Drawing in the Details
Objective:
The students will complete the work they began last week by using black ink to draw in the details of their self portrait.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 18

Looking at Grant Wood's American Gothic
Objective:
The students will become familiar with the famous painting American Gothic by Grant Wood. The students will begin a drawing of the painting to reinforce careful observation and familiarity.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 19

Completing our Version of American Gothic
Objective:
The students will complete the work they began in the last lesson. They will use crayons and copy the color patterns used in the original painting and make their own color decisions to use on the drawing of themselves.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 20

Heart Prints
Objective:
The students will cut out several heart shapes, plan a composition using the heart shapes, and then spatter paint on the background as is the basic technique of silk screening.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 21

Completing our Heart Prints
Objective:
The students will complete their heart prints by adding finishing touches with marker to the inside of the heart shapes.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 22

Weaving Yarn Making the Loom
Objective:
The students will make a loom and thread the warp so they can begin their own weaving. The student will practice simple measurement during the process of making the loom.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 23

Weaving the Yarn and Completing our Work
Objective:
The student will complete a yarn weaving made on their own loom. The student will be engaged in creating patterns and developing perseverance.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 24

Texture Rubbings and Crayon Resist
Objective:
The student will know that texture is the quality of a surface and that a rubbing can create textures on the paper. The student will know what a crayon/ watercolor resist is by painting watercolor on top of the crayon rubbings.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 25

Designing our Row Houses with Our Textured Papers
Objective:
The student will complete a collage using the textured paper we made last lesson of Row houses. The student will arrange the cut shapes so that there will be four houses with three stories. The students will complete the work by adding details with black crayon.

Looking at and Making Garden Flowers
Objective:
The student will carefully look at and examine a variety of flowers. The student will draw their observations onto paper and then make their own flowers using construction paper.


2nd Grade Art Lesson 27

Drawing from our Flower Garden
Objective:
The student will use the flower garden that we made in the last lesson to draw a picture of flowers. The student will create their own coloring book page of flowers.

Coloring in Our Flowers
Objective:
The student will complete the work they began last week by using markers to color in the flowers.

Value Study/ Making a Shape into a Form
Objective:
The student will know that value is the range of lightness and darkness of of a color or of black and white. The student will make a gray scale and use it as a reference to make shapes look like forms.

Objective:
The student will complete a final self portrait incorporating value into their work.
