Art Lesson Summary for Fourth Grade Students


4th Grade Lesson 1

Base Line Self Portrait
Objective:
The student will draw a self portrait, date it and put it away to use it as a comparison to a year end self-portrait. This will show them how much they have improved at the end of the year.


4th Grade Lesson 2

Elements of Art / Shape Color and Space
Objective:
The student will know the warm and cool colors. The student will know that a shape is an area enclosed by a line and that there are two types of shapes, geometric and organic. The student will show space by overlapping shapes.


4th Grade Lesson 3

The Elements of Art / Value / Making Shapes into Forms
Objective:
The student will use value to make a shape look like a form. The student will make their own grey scale to use as a reference for seeing the range of values.


4th Grade Lesson 4

The Elements of Art / Lines and Texture
Objective:
The student will know how to create line variation and understand why it matters in drawings and know that texture is the quality of a surface. The student will use ink to draw line variations and texture.


4th Grade Lesson 5

The Elements of Art / Creating Space / Reviewing the Seven Elements
Objective:
The student will use size, placement and overlapping to show distance. The student will look at all of the art element cards we have made, label each of them and review the information we have learned.


4th Grade Lesson 6

Observation versus Memory
Objective:
The students will compare their own work created by memorizing visual information with their work created by observing the same information. Students will find that looking at the object you want to draw is easier and yields improved results.


4th Grade Lesson 7

Working with Patterns / Giant Leaf Drawing
Objective:
The student will study a variety of leaf shapes and do studies (drawings) of them. The student will learn the color spectrum and design a pattern to fill in the giant leaf they selected for their work.

Completing Our Leaf Drawing
Objective:
The student will complete their giant leaf drawing by filling in the background with the patterns and color spectrum that they used on the inside of their leaf.


4th Grade Lesson 9

Looking at Insects / Drawing for Study
Objective:
The student will know what a variety of insects look like by doing studies (drawings) of them. The student will select one insect to draw off and color in on a large sheet of white paper.


4th Grade Lesson 10

Water Coloring our Insect Background
Objective:
The students will complete their background by filling it in with watercolor. The student will know what a watercolor resist is.


4th Grade Lesson 11

Working with Balance / Creating Fun Faces
Objective:
The students will focus on symmetrical balance by creating a face using two colors and cutting it out in halves.


4th Grade Lesson 12

Looking at a Rose Window
Objective:
The student will look at the rose window designed by and built by Jehan de Chelles (Zhon duh Shell) for the Cathedral of Notre Dame. The student will understand by the example what radial balance is. The student will cut out a skeleton for making their own rose window design.


4th Grade Lesson 13

Filling Our Rose Windows with Color
Objective:
The student will complete their rose window designs by cutting out shapes of tissue paper to fill in the cut shapes with color.


4th Grade Lesson 14

Torn Paper Portraits / Emphasizing Expression
Objective:
The student will study their own expressions in a mirror and examine what happens with their facial features with each different expression. The student will begin working on an expressive portrait that will be filled in using torn pieces of construction paper.


4th Grade Lesson 15

Completing Our Portraits
Objective:
The student will finish their torn paper portraits by filling in the background. The students add any necessary detail to the completed work.


4th Grade Lesson 16

Building Paper Sculptures
Objective:
The student will build a paper sculpture using scrap pieces of poster board. The student will focus on the importance of looking at the form from all sides and perspectives.


4th Grade Lesson 17

Building Toothpick Sculptures
Objective:
The student will build a sculpture using toothpicks and glue. The student will contrast a sculpture built with lines with a previous sculpture they built using shapes. The student will focus on looking at all sides of the sculpture to create a balanced and interesting form.


4th Grade Lesson 18

Building up a Stamp for Printmaking
Objective:
The student will use poster board to cut out designs and build up shapes on a background. This will serve as a plate which will be used for making prints.


4th Grade Lesson 19

Printing Our Cards / Foiling Over Our Plate
Objective:
The student will follow the proper print making procedure and print as many cards as they can. The students will use their printing plate for another work of art which will be completed in the next lesson.


4th Grade Lesson 20

Drawing in Details on Our Foiled Plates / Inking Them Over
Objective:
The student will complete the foiled plate from the previous lesson by filling it in with designs to create texture and inking over it to give it an antiqued look.


4th Grade Lesson 21

Making a Heart Collage
Objective:
The student will use the shape of a heart as the predominant shape in a collage. The student will work out an interesting composition using the heart shape and other cut paper shapes


4th Grade Lesson 22

Working With Cool Colors / Drawing a Snowman
Objective:
The students will show an understanding of using color to communicate temperature by using the cool colors and white to draw a snowman. The student will complete their snowman drawing by filling in the background landscape.


4th Grade Lesson 23

Drawing Our Snowman with Pencil
Objective:
The student will learn how different media affects the results of their work by copying their chalk drawing with pencil. The students will be aware of the use of the art elements value, form and space into their drawing.


4th Grade Lesson 24

Looking at Our Shoe / Making a Pattern to Draw off Four Paintings
Objective:
The student will examine their shoe and complete a drawing of it on a 6 X 9 sheet of paper. The drawing will be cut out and used as a pattern so it can be repeated four times onto a 12 X 18 sheet of paper.


4th Grade Lesson 25

Working With Color / Painting our First Two Paintings with Primary and Complimentary Colors
Objective:
The student will know what the primary colors are and what the three sets of complimentary colors are. The student will fill in one of their shoe drawings using primary colors and the second with one set of complimentary colors. The student will practice controlling a paint brush and mixing colors.


4th Grade Lesson 26

Completing Our Last Two Paintings with Warm or Cool Colors and Using Tints
Objective:
The student will complete the last two paintings of their shoe using either warm or cool colors on one and using one color with tints on the other. The student will know and review what the primary colors are, what complimentary colors are, what warm and cool colors are and what a tint is.


4th Grade Lesson 27

Shoe Shape Collage with Patterned Background
Objective:
The students will use the now familiar shapes of their shoes to make a collage. The student will complete the collage with shapes arranged to create a pattern in the background.


4th Grade Lesson 28

Looking at Georgia O'Keefe and Studying Flowers
Objective:
The student will become familiar with the work of Georgia O'Keefe and her painting Poppy. The student will become familiar with flowers by drawing them.


4th Grade Lesson 29

Working with Value on Your Flower
Objective:
The students will design their own flower or copy one from their previous drawings and begin coloring it in with oil pastels. The student will show their understanding of value by mixing and blending colors to show the subtle changes in color.

Completing Our Flower Drawings
Objective:
The students will complete the oil pastel drawing of a flower by filling in an interesting background. The student will evaluate their work and add any finishing touches that may be needed.
