Fourth Grade Art Lesson 29
Studying Flowers, Part 2 Working with Value on Our Flower
Objective:
The students will design their own flower or copy one from their previous drawings and begin coloring it in with oil pastels. The student will show their understanding of value by mixing and blending colors to show the subtle changes in color.
Materials:
flower studies from last lesson, oil pastels, newspaper to cover the tables, scrap paper for practice blending
Procedure:
Today we will draw off our flower and begin coloring it in with oil pastels. Use the flower studies from our last lesson to help you with your work. Plan you drawing before you begin so that you have a basic idea of the colors you want to use. Draw your flower off with a light color oil pastel such as white, yellow or gray. Be sure to draw large filling your paper with the flower. Begin coloring with the lightest colors first. Black, red, dark blue, purple should all be used after the lighter, more pastel colors are filled in to avoid smearing. Practice blending colors on your scrap paper to get a feel for the amount of pressure you need to use to get the effect you want. White is great for smearing colors together as well as for showing highlights. As your coloring progresses you will begin to understand how easy it is to get a wide range of value with oil pastels. Try to complete coloring your flower in. If there is not enough time, do not rush; just wait until your next art time. Be careful with the oil pastels, they do not come out of your clothing. If you have clean newsprint available, put a sheet on top of each drawing when you stack the class' work for storing.
Conclusion:
Examine your work paying close attention to the different values you have incorporated into your flower. If you cannot count at least three values of the same color you may need to go back into your drawing to create greater contrast between the different values. Store your drawing in a safe place and be thinking of what you will want to do in your background next week.
