Third Grade Art Lesson 20
Looking at Symbols, Part 2 Completing Our Drawing
Objective:
The students will create a radial design as a border for their Presidential Seal drawing.
Materials:
Last lesson's work, colored pencils
Procedure:
If you have not already, complete your Presidential Seal drawing. I would much rather you spend more time to do excellent work than to hurry and do less precise work. When your symbol is complete, you are to design a border to go around the seal. Obviously the paper plate itself dictates a particular pattern for your border. You are encouraged to be creative and imaginative to come up with a pattern that complements your seal drawing. You may want to practice several ideas on a scrap piece of paper before working on your seal. Try mixing colors for a more interesting look and try a variety of patterns working with both shape and line. Once you have come up with a great plan, carefully complete it on your paper plate border.
Conclusion:
Ask the students to describe the Presidential Seal without looking at their drawings. Be sure to mount the plates on a black posterboard and display for everyone to enjoy.
