Third Grade Art Lesson 18
Drawing a Musical Instrument, Using Shapes and Color to Communicate
Objective:
The students will draw a musical instrument and design a background using line, shapes, and color which reflect the character of the instrument.
Materials:
White paper, markers
Procedure:
If you recall our last lesson, we looked at the painting The Banjo Lesson. Do any of you play the banjo, or perhaps another musical instrument. If you play an instrument, you may want to draw that one. You may choose any instrument that interests you. Consider the huge variety of instruments available, such as harps, flutes, guitars, clarinets, saxophones, etc. It would be most helpful for you to find a picture to work from. Draw your instrument off large on your white paper. As you draw consider the sounds or character of the instrument you're working with. As you think of this consider what colors, lines, or shapes come to mind. Once your instrument is drawn off and colored, use shape, line, and color to complete the background, echoing the character of your instrument. Be sure to fill in your whole paper. Use your markers carefully; do not scribble.
Conclusion:
Before you call your work finished, ask yourself the following questions: Did I draw my instrument off large? Do the colors, lines, and shapes in my background reflect the character of the instrument? Did I control my markers and do refined work?
