Third Grade Art Lesson 10
Looking at Architecture, Part 1 Building Our Dream House
Objective:
The students will examine the architecture of the Taj Mahal as well as St. Basil's Cathedral. The students will design their own dream house and create it using collage.
Materials:
Construction paper, scissors, glue sticks, 9 x 12 background paper
Procedure:
Encourage the students to look at the variety of shapes and details on each of the two buildings. Have them describe the many different parts of each building. Note the use of shape, line, and color as well as proportion. After a thorough discussion of the buildings, encourage the students to design a dream home of their own. Explain that money is no object and they can have any style home they would like. Ask them to consider how their house would be arranged, thinking of its uses as well as its appearance. Remind them that windows indicate floors and to be careful where they place their windows. Consider entrance ways, balconies, roof lines, etc. Have them draw off their idea on scrap paper. Once they have the best plan, cut out the shapes and glue them down on the background paper. Do not hurry. Be sure to cut out small shapes to show detail, such as door frames and window frames.
Conclusion:
Ask the students if they can name each of the building we looked at. Have them share their own dream house and describe its purpose. Display the students' work for everyone to enjoy.
