Kindergarten Art Lesson 18
Texture Painting, Part 1
Objective:
The student will discover the meaning of texture by using paint and objects pressed in paint. They will create five different textures.
Materials:
Heavy white paper (each child will need five wide strips of paper), red, yellow, blue green and white tempera paint, a paintbrush (preferably flat 1), a plastic fork, other objects that can be pressed, dragged or rolled through the paint to make textures, water and paper towels
Procedure:
Introduce the art element texture as the way that something feels. In art we create texture to give our images greater interest. We will create textures in paint today. Beginning with one color, paint an entire piece of paper solid. Before it has time to dry, use your paint brush to create a texture in the paint. You might try dabbing the brush, swirling it around or dragging it in some type of pattern through the paint to create a texture. With each color, go through this same process but make each color a different texture. In some you may press objects in a pattern to create a texture, try dragging the fork in a curvy motion through the paint. Be creative and use your imagination to create interesting textures.
Conclusion:
When you have five different colors with five different textures completed, set your work aside to dry. Once it is dry you may want to put your papers between books to flatten them. In the next lesson we will use these textured paintings to create a landscape collage.
