Kindergarten Art Lesson 14
Self Portrait, Part 1 Children in Art
Objective:
The students will view several paintings that have children as the main subject. Attention will be directed to the composition of the work. After making these observations the students will begin a portrait drawing of their own.
Materials:
Images of children in art (see below), 12” x 18” Manila paper and crayons
Procedure:
Introduce the works of art representing children by the different famous artist. (Any painting will do as long as you direct the child to look at the composition or arrangement of the painting. See the video for the particular ones I chose.) As we look at the paintings point out how much of the canvas the child (ren) takes up. Also notice what they are doing and where they are looking (i.e. at us, or at something else?). Once the class has carefully viewed and discussed several different paintings, have them begin working on their own self portrait. Emphasize that they draw large using a light colored crayon beginning with the head and working their way down the neck, shoulders, arms, etc. If there is time they may begin coloring their work in, but next lesson we will look at the same paintings again to focus in on the backgrounds. Coloring technique will also be emphasized in part 2 of this project.
Conclusion:
When class time is up collect all of the drawings and store until next week. Ask the children to tell which painting they liked looking at most and why. Encourage them to give as many details as they can about their favorite work.
