First Grade Art Lesson 5
Fall Leaves, Part 1 Warm colors
Objective:
The student will know their warm colors and celebrate the fall season by creating a work of fall leaves.
Materials:
9 x 18 inch white paper, crayons, a variety of fall leaves
Procedure:
Is it fall where you are? Most places in the U.S. do have a fall season. If you are not in one of those places, you will get to celebrate fall in your artwork. We are going to use the fall season to learn our warm colors. Who knows what happens in the fall? That's right, all our leaves begin to change colors. Gather a collection of fall leaves and look closely at them. Look closely at the colors oranges, reds, and yellows. Look closely at the shapes of the leaves and the veins that run inside them. We are going to trace these leaves falling down our paper. You may use a variety of shapes or you may just want to use the same leaf. Trace your leaf several times onto your paper as though it were falling. We are going to use our warm color crayons to color our leaves in. The best way to complete each leaf is by layering your colors. First color lightly across a leaf. Be careful not to color beyond the edges of the leaf getting a ragged look. You want to keep the edges sharp. You want color variation on each leaf. Build up your color layer after layer until your leaves are solidly filled with crayon wax. Color all your leaves and be sure to add the veins.
Conclusion:
Examine your work. Make sure your crayon coloring is solid on each leaf. Be sure you have blended many warm colors on each leaf. Show the leaf's veins and double check that you have clean, sharp edges.
