First Grade Art Lesson 30
Drawing Our Own Expressions with Oil Pastels
Objective:
The student will complete their final self portrait with oil pastels and create an expression on their face.
Materials:
The painted paper from last lesson, oil pastels, mirror
Procedure:
Today we will complete our last work of art for our first grade year! We have spent the last two lessons looking at expressions on our face and now we will put what we learned on paper. Place your mirror so that you can see in it while you draw. Use a light colored oil pastel to draw off your eyes, then nose, then mouth. Draw the shape of your head around your facial features. When you begin coloring, blend your colors and emphasize your expression using your color. Think of an interesting background to complete your work. Control your oil pastels and take advantage of the quality of the material. Have fun completing your work.
Conclusion:
When you have your work finished, have your teacher get out the first self portraits that we drew in the beginning of this year on the index cards. Compare these exciting drawings with those that you first completed. Look how far you have come! Enjoy your portraits. Mount them and display them for everyone to enjoy.
