First Grade Art Lesson 3
Decorative Lettering Part 1
Objective:
The student will draw off the first letter of their last name and decorate the letter with design.
Materials:
White paper, markers
Procedure:
Look at the illuminated manuscripts posted. Illuminated manuscripts are books that were written by artists. Notice how the first letters were very decorative. Typically the letter is large and colorful and has design in and around it. Draw the first letter of your last name on your white paper. Make it large, taller than your hand. Once you have it drawn off, you may want to go over it several times to make the line thick and dark. Select colors that you like to do the decoration on your letter. Begin decorating your letter by using simple patterns, such as dots, dashes, lines, or other shapes. Much of your decoration will simply be patterns repeated over and over. Be creative and use your imagination to decorate your letter.
Conclusion:
Today we looked at some ancient illuminated manuscripts. We began working on our writing and turned a single letter into a design. We will complete our work next lesson.
