First Grade Art Lesson 2
Cutting Lines, Creating a Collage
Objective:
The student will cut out a variety of lines and glue them into an interesting composition for a collage.
Materials:
A variety of colored construction paper, scissors, glue stick
Procedure:
Today, boys and girls, we are going to look at the art element line. We use lines in many types of art work. Today we will create a collage. But first, let's cut some lines. Choose one sheet of paper and cut all the way from one end to the other to get one thin straight line. Using another sheet of paper, let's cut a curvy line. Remember when using scissors, we only open and close the scissors with our fingers. To make turns in your paper, move the paper, not the scissors. In cutting out your curvy line, turn you paper this way and that to create your curves. Next, let's cut out a zig zag line. Choose another color. Again, create the zig zag by turning your paper, not the scissors. Choose a final color to use as your background. Pick the types of line you like the most and cut out several more of each. Once you have five or seven lines cut out, put them on your background paper without gluing and move them around as if they were puzzle pieces. Don't feel that you have to keep the first arrangement you see. Have fun making different arrangements. Finally put glue onto the back of the line, not on your background paper. Press your lines carefully into the pattern you have chosen.
Conclusion:
Today we have looked at and cut different types of lines. We have also created a collage by gluing shapes onto a background. Be sure to mount your work and display it for everyone to enjoy.
