Fifth Grade Art Lesson 30
Value Study, Part 2 Completing Our Final Portrait
Objective:
The student will complete their final self portrait by designing a background to accentuate their drawing.
Materials:
Last lesson's work, color medium for background (crayons, markers, or colored pencils)
Procedure:
Examine your portrait for a full range of value, details, and texture. As you look at yourself consider a background that will draw attention to your pencil drawing. Frequently a simple pattern will serve well. You may even use one or more letters of your first or last name to design a compelling pattern. Plan your work on scrap paper before putting it on your drawing. Make your color choices before you draw. To complete your background, lightly draw it in and then color it. Control your materials. If you are using crayons or markers, blend to create an interesting look. Finish your work well.
Conclusion:
Have your teacher retrieve the self portraits we did in the very first lesson. Compare them with today's work. Do you see improvement in the quality of your work? These portraits will make wonderful keepsakes; be sure to show them to your parents.
