What your 1st Grade students will learn from each lesson 1st Grade Lesson 1 Base Line Self Portraits Objective: The student will draw a self portrait, date it and put it away to use as a comparison for improvement at the end of the year. 1st Grade Art Lesson 2 Cutting Lines / Creating a Collage Objective: The student will cut out a variety of lines and glue them into an interesting composition for a collage. 1st Grade Art Lesson 3 Decorating a Letter Objective: The student will draw off the first letter of their last name and decorate the letter with design. 1st Grade Art Lesson 4 Creating a Border for Our Letter Objective: The student will design a border for their letter drawing. 1st Grade Art Lesson 5 Fall Leaves / Working with Warm Colors in Crayon Objective: The student will learn about warm colors and celebrate the fall season by creating a work of fall leaves. 1st Grade Art Lesson 6 Watercoloring Our Fall Leaf Background Objective: The student will complete their fall leaf drawing by filling the background with cool water colors. 1st Grade Art Lesson 7 Indian Studies / Weaving Mats Objective: The student will weave paper to create a mat. 1st Grade Art Lesson 8 Painting an American Indian Symbol on Our Mats Objective: The student will complete their mat by painting an American Indian symbol in the center. 1st Grade Art Lesson 9 Symmetry / Spin, Slide, and Radial Objective: The student will work with shapes to create spin, slide, and radial symmetry. 1st Grade Art Lesson 10 Looking at Pablo Picasso / Making Our Own Picasso Portrait Objective: The student will become familiar with a work by Pablo Picasso and using geometric shapes will create their own Picasso portrait. 1st Grade Art Lesson 11 Completing Our Picasso Portrait Objective: The student will complete their Picasso portrait by gluing down their shapes and filling their background with design. 1st Grade Art Lesson 12 Geometric Shapes and Pattern / A Collage Objective: The students will cut several geometric shapes and fill each shape with colorful patterns. 1st Grade Art Lesson 13 Seeing Our Collage in a Different Way Objective: The student will make a rubbing of the collage they made last lesson in order that they may see their composition in a new way. 1st Grade Art Lesson 14 Bean Ornaments Objective: The student will use their imagination to create free-form ornaments using white glue and beans. 1st Grade Art Lesson 15 Print Making / Making a Relief Plate Objective: The student will create a relief plate to use as a stamp for printing cards. 1st Grade Art Lesson 16 Printing Cards with Our Stamp Objective: The students will print cards using the stamp they made last lesson. 1st Grade Art Lesson 17 Working with Landscapes / More on Printmaking Objective: The student will be able to recognize a landscape painting and the three parts, foreground, middle ground and background. The student will compose a landscape on a styrofoam plate by incising lines into the surface. 1st Grade Art Lesson 18 Printing Our Landscapes Objective: The student will ink and print the plate of their landscape image. 1st Grade Art Lesson 19 Midterm Portrait / Looking at Michelangelo Objective: The student will be familiar with the work “Portrait of Andrea Quaratesi”, by Michelangelo. The student will create their own portrait in a similar pose using neutral color crayons. 1st Grade Art Lesson 20 Working with Texture / Making a Heart Collage Objective: The student will know what the art element texture is and will make rubbings of a variety of textures. The student will use their rubbings to create a collage of textured hearts. 1st Grade Art Lesson 21 Crayon Drawing / Giant Hearts with Color and Design Objective: The student will begin working on a drawing of a giant heart in an effort to practice design and color application. 1st Grade Art Lesson 22 Completing Our Giant Heart Drawings Objective: The student will complete the giant heart drawings they began in the last lesson by filling in the background with more design and pattern. 1st Grade Art Lesson 23 Watercolor Painting / Working with Value Objective: The student will learn about the art element value and use watercolor to create a range of values on a background. 1st Grade Art Lesson 24 Making a Skyline Silhouette for Our Value Painting Objective: The students will know what a silhouette is and cut out a city skyline silhouette to glue onto their value painting. 1st Grade Art Lesson 25 Crayon Etching / Preparing Our Surface / Planning Our Flower Design Objective: The student will prepare a surface on which they can make a crayon etching. The student will design a plan for their crayon etching using flowers as their subject. 1st Grade Art Lesson 26 Completing Our Etching Objective: The student will complete a crayon etching using flowers as their subject. 1st Grade Art Lesson 27 Putting Our Hands In Front of Our Face / Working with Space Objective: The student will learn how to create foreshortening and space by drawing their hands in front of their face. 1st Grade Art Lesson 28 Expressions on My face / Learning to Observe Objective: The student will spend time looking at their own expressions and observing the changes in their facial features. The students will draw of their observations on white paper. 1st Grade Art Lesson 29 Looking at Munch’s “The Scream” / Painting the Background of Our Final Self Portrait Objective: The student will look at Edward Munch’s “The Scream” and examine it in detail. The student will copy the work on white paper with crayons. The student will paint a background for our final expressive portrait. 1st Grade Art Lesson 30 Drawing Our Expressions with Oil Pastels Objective: The student will complete their final self portrait with oil pastels and create an expression on their face.
